MORE ABOUT US
Doula Services

I began my work as a doula in 2006, after the birth of my first child. While pregnant, I was entranced with labor and birth. I find that I still am.

My intention as a doula is to support the mother and her partner/mother/sister/friends.  Often this means helping you navigate your options, without judgment or coercion.  I am not outcome-focused, meaning I do not consider a birth to be a success by a narrow criteria of unmedicated, or vaginal or fast. The only goal I have for you is that you feel supported, respected and loved.

Sometimes this is a very physical task of massage, hip-squeezes, fetching water, etc. Other times this is informational support of helping you get the details you need to make your choices. Sometimes I offer suggestions for positions or ways to help labor progress. And at times I am simply a calm presence, reassuring you and your partner that everything is normal and good. Often I enable the partner to support you fully by giving him/her breaks for food and rest, so that you have no gaps in your care.

I have supported women in home births, Cesarean births, three-day-long births, births with epidurals, VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), natural births, births after infertility and births after loss.  Every one was miraculous.

About Holly

I am a Texas-transplant who moved to Chicago for a degree in Music and Art. Soon after graduating, an unexpected pregnancy catapulted me into the world of birth plans and stretch marks and the vast unknowns on the other side.

While pregnant, I consumed every book about pregnancy, labor and postpartum. I was obsessed with giving my child the very best start to life. I had a core belief that the transition into parenthood mattered. After that birth, I found I was still reading the books and talking about birth.

Some big life changes, two more children, 17 years of doula work, and I’m still fascinated by the psychology of transition. I have worked with hundreds of childbearing couples since 2006 as a doula and childbirth educator.

I am a Birthing From Within mentor with previous certifications through DONA and BirthWorks. I have received advanced training in “Birth Story Medicine” with Pam England, Virginia Bobro, Nikki Shaheed and Danit Tsur, and have been holding Birth Story Listening sessions since 2014, bringing compassion, nuance and expert-level skill to each client.

Besides teaching expectant parents, I also train medical professionals in patient care and communication.

Certifications and Trainings

My greatest teachers have been the babies and parents who have shown me the nuance, complexity and eternal mystery of birth.
