COMMENTS ON OUTCOMES

C-section and instrumental rates reflect birth outcomes of clients who were admitted to BRBC in labor but transferred before birth, expressed as a percentage of all clients admitted to the Birth Center in labor. The Birth Center does not perform C-sections, operative delivery nor does it offer epidural anesthesia.

The Birth Center does not currently accept clients who had a prior C-section, which is why we do not report a VBAC rate.

Overall Induction Rate reflects % of clients who chose non-pharmacological labor inductions methods for medical indications, e.g. late term pregnancy, PROM, AMA and GDMA as an alternative to transferring care and accepting pitocin. Pharmacological induction rates are included in transfer rates.

MATERNITY CARE OVERVIEW

Burr Ridge Birth Center offers a warm, compassionate, and home-like environment where families receive exceptional and empowering midwifery care.

Our exam rooms are spaces for conversation and unhurried prenatal and gyne visits. Our thoughtfully designed birth suites offer a beautiful and calming space for laboring while also stowing equipment and supplies nearby to ensure a safe birth. Our personalized education classes and support groups provide an opportunity for learning and building community as you start your journey into parenthood. We provide education, guidance, and continuous support to ensure a satisfying health care experience throughout the entire pregnancy and postpartum journey.

Prenatal care
  • An initial appointment to discuss your goals and hopes for your pregnancy and birth, as well as a thorough review of your health and history to assure that you’re a candidate for birthing with BRBC and a tour of the center if you haven’t already enjoyed one

  • Subsequent appointments filled with connection, check-in’s on your baby’s heart tones (when possible), your comfort, assessing your uterine growth and answering all of your questions

  • Did we say NO RUSHING? Each appointment is between 30-60 minutes in length, so more time for individualized care

  • Meeting all of the midwives and getting to know our lead nurses and birth assistants. These relationships are fostered over the course of your pregnancy to ensure you feel connected to your team during your birthing time (the goal is to have as many familiar faces as possible to protect those labor hormones!)

  • EVERYTHING IN-HOUSE: labs drawn by us, ultrasounds hosted in our cozy clinic rooms, birthing prep classes just down the hall!

  • Informed consent, shared decision-making and evidence-based care throughout every step

Labor & birth

At the Burr Ridge Birth Center, you birth on your own terms. Body-led pushing. Squat on a birthing stool. Lean back in the tub, or the queen-sized bed. Bend over in the shower to catch your baby. You follow your body and we’re there to support and encourage!

You can expect:

  • Eating and drinking whenever you like, moving all around the suite as easily as you need, intermittent monitoring with a hand-held doppler, and cervical exams only when you consent to them!
  • Team greeting you as you arrive in labor and guiding you through to baby’s first feed. Our Birth Assistants join the team when you’re close to meeting your baby to assist the midwife and then nurture you throughout the initial postpartum period.

  • Doulas are welcome and encouraged!

Postpartum care

For the first 4-6 hours, we focus on as much uninterrupted bonding time as possible and do not separate baby, especially while doing skin-to-skin time, unless it’s emergent. There is no rushed period for baby to latch, allowing them to set the pace for laid-back breast/chestfeeding. Families are able to rest, eat and nap together. The first newborn exam done by the midwife is within arms’ reach of you. And then, if you’re feeling open, you can indulge in a soothing and healing postpartum herbal bath before going home. Most birthing parents are stable enough to check out about 4-6 hours after their birth—another birth center difference!

Our Facility

The Burr Ridge Birth Center is a 6,400 sq. foot free-standing birth center that encompasses prenatal guidance, birth support and well body care at every stage of life through the brilliant midwifery model.

Our birth center has, at the heart of the building, a big living room, dining room and kitchen for clients and community members to enjoy. Growing families will be able to invite their own nearest and dearest to gather as they welcome their baby into the world…and maybe even cook up a nourishing meal to enjoy right after the birth!

BRBC houses a cozy clinic section with four clinical rooms for appointments and consultations, as well as in-house lab work and ultrasound.

Our classroom hosts educational offerings of all kinds—childbirth ed, lactation classes, workshops and trainings led by our own staff and experts in our community.

We have three 400-square foot birthing suites for families to labor, birth and recover in, all which will have the comforts of home:

  • a spa-like shower in the en-suite bathroom for hydrotherapy with toasty towels warming on the towel warmer right beside it

  • a generously-sized permanent tub in the suite for hydrotherapy, water births and postpartum herbal sitz baths

  • birth swings and Swedish barres to help with comfort and labor positioning

  • a queen sized bed with real linens to rest in with your partner when you need it and to relax in after birth with your baby

  • TENS units and nitrous oxide for additional relief measures

  • birthing stools/CUBS positioners/birthing balls/rebozos to support upright positioning and birth
